Colour theory

Colour wheel:

. Primary colour: Red, yellow, blue

. Secondary colour: Primary colour * Primary colour . Tertiary colour: Primary colour * Secondary colour

Colours dimension:

Definition:

Hue: Word to define colour.

Value: Define lightness and darkness.

Intensity: Define brightness of pure hue such as Yellow is high intensity whereas purple is lowest intensity.

Temperature: define hot and cold colour such as Red is hot whereas blue is cold.

Contrast: complementary colours are those opposite.

Harmonious colours: category of colour with close value such as red harmony and blue harmony.

Colour interaction: Partitive: how colour react next to each other.
Reflective: How intense colour react next to less intense colour.

Simultaneous contrast: Achronique contrast: reaction between opposite colours.
Chronique contrast: reaction between black and white.

Optical mixing: The eye mix colours if they got the same value

Reflected colour: light is reflected on an intense colour wall which reflects its colour.

Colour design principle:

Contrast and proportion:

. Make the eye react
. Energising, active
. Contrast is used in small proportion.
. More there is a contrast between values, less the amount needed for balanced proportion.

Goethe’s notation on the intensity:

White: 10 Yellow: 9 Yellow/green: 7-8 Green: 6 Blue/Green: 5
Blue: 4 Violet: 3 Red: 6 orange: 8 Magnenta: 6
Cyan: 4 Black: 0

Notice that white and warm colours have a greater strength compared to black and cold colours which are weaker.

Definition:

. Rhythm: - Repetition of hue which create harmony
- Progression of hue which create dynamism

. Balance: - symmetrical which is a mirror imaging which create static
-Asymmetrical

Colour principle:

. Emphasis: 1) Colour contrast (light/dull; warm/cold; light/dark…)
2) Size area (small/big)
3) Texture (rough/ smooth)
4) Gradation (soft/hard; sharp/gradation)
5) Contrast with surrounding

. Discord: Discord is a colour scheme with a reverse of the natural tonal order (add white)

. Reverse discord: (add black)

. Tonal keys: Tonal keys are the way to label various schemes made up of nine gradation of tone (high major, high minor, intermediate high major, intermediate low major, intermediate minor, low major, low minor).
